Interviews - 3 Myths about First Impressions at Interviews
Are you preparing for a job interview? There are many myths about, how to make a good first impression. Here are 3 myths to dispel:
Myth 1: You have to wear a suit. Yes, it's true that most people should wear a suit. In business, you need to manage expectations, so it all depends on your industry, and the type of work you are applying. Ask yourself: How can people expect to go in your industry that you look like? In the formal sectors, such as banking, financial services and Pharmaceutical sales, you should definitely take a conservative, well-fitting suit.
But if you opt for a job in a trendy industry such as design or advertising, the most important elements of your wardrobe is your personal style. You need to look at the latest and unique, while still a professional look.
Myth No. 2: Skills are more important than image. Wrong. Here's a short story to illustrate the point. Two candidates applied for the same> Job at a large bank. One was qualified for the job, but a bad impression on her wardrobe and body language. The other was inexperienced, but a positive first impression. Guess who got the job? The second candidate. The Bank thought it would be easier to train her as to change the image of the first candidates. It is sad but true that the way you come across you can make or break your career, no matter how well trained and qualifiedare.
Myth No. 3 You can always overcome a poor first impression. Sorry, but that's not true. In an interview, you have minute, seconds actually connect to the interviewer. This is because we make an image is almost instantaneous. And we rarely change our first impression, because we have no time. Once we reached a decision, we are on the next thing. In our time compressed world, no one wants to reconsider a decision.
When you make a good first impressionfocus on the polished presentation of a "professional image to get your foot in the door. Only then can sell your skills and experience.
