First - Create a job search strategy

Stephen Covey wrote a book in 1994 called First Things First: to live to love to learn, to leave his mark. In this he included what he called the four-quadrant matrix for importance and urgency. Only said it considered it important to distinguish between urgent / not urgent and important / not important to distinguish. His goal was the people on those activities that would drive positive long-term focused (quadrant 2 for the second Covey, includes aspects which are of great valuenegligible probability).

Then I had another idea familiar with Covey, I started thinking: How can this research work will be applied?

My first task was to prepare a short list of typical tasks you are looking for a job in any boxing Covey. I did this for granted that one just beginning their search.

Quadrant 1 - Urgent and important

- Send back to local businesses
- Application forms

Quadrant 2 - Not urgentImportant

- Create / update the resume, the word lift, cover letter, a pager
- Schedule informational interviews
- Create the target company, geography, location lists
- Creation of a transitional budget
- Identify network accounts
- Interview preparation

Quadrant 3 - Urgent not important

- Return calls from recruiters
- Accommodation Manager called cold

Quadrant 4 - Not urgent and not important

- Check and check online job board
- Creatingseveral versions of new
- Updated LinkedIn profile
- Writing for hourly updates on Facebook

So, what do you mean? One of the keys to a successful job search, and have a clear strategy, well defined. The main components of your strategy should be built soon so that they can perform their daily work. And with a good strategy, you need to determine the barriers that resistant quadrant 1 and quadrant 3 tasks to earn that fast (or) reaction. Can you see how thePrevention of quadrant 2, you may be left in a difficult situation?

Imagine your job search on day 1 without a strategy. What do you do? If you're like most people are without a strategy, this is your first week like this:

Monday - Monster checking, calling a couple of recruiters, send a short curriculum vitae
Tuesday - Advertisers job application online at Career Builder, to remember
Wednesday - Update LinkedIn and connect with new people, update Facebook for moreThe recruiters to review Monster
Thursday - Updating companies send CV, new, new beginning recruiters, has set up two new accounts on facts and Simply Hired
Friday - read the forum posts at Simply Hired and add a couple of your e-mail with a new list of recruiters, apply for new jobs from Monster warning to accept new connections LinkedIn.

If this is an extreme example? Not in my experience. You see, without a strategy with a rifle on the left, radiation here and there on the basis ofprevailing winds. This is a very reactive existence - that rely heavily on the phone and the computer (two instruments very impersonal) are over. Not a good start to look at the work and what, if repeated week after week, the market is competitive in the labor market.

What if the focus was on the second quadrant in the first week? Not so funny, is not it? After all, Quadrant 2 does not offer a wide range of instant gratification. In fact, as your strategicA week does not apply to an individual contact or a single recruiter. Shocking, I know.

A second focus dial (build your leadership strategy of job search) provides a solid foundation and a real sense of purpose. It ensures that your efforts are focusing on the outcome that you identified targeted.

New idea.
