How To Get A Job Without Experience - Sell Yourself Just As You Would If You Were A Salesperson
It's easier to find a job than you think. You don't need experience, you just think you do; perhaps that is just your excuse because your job search isn't going quite well - Nobody's hiring me because I don't have any relevant work experience. Bad excuse!
Back when I first finished school I didn't have any experience either. I did what everybody else did - I sent resumes in response to job ads in the classifieds. That didn't work. Then I got creative. I was specifically looking for a sales job because that's what I thought that I would like. I thought to myself, what is a sales manager looking for when hiring a salesperson? I knew the answer. A sales manager wants somebody that can sell. How can I show that I could sell without actually having a track record? I could show him.
Here's what I did. I was targeting a B2B job selling copiers. I picked out a few prospects and called the sales managers in those offices. I didn't call to ask for a job (not at first). I called the sales manager (cold call) pretending to be an office cleaner and tried to sell him my services. I really wasn't an office cleaner. I was playing a role. I was pretending. I just wanted to be able to showcase my sales skills. It worked! The sales managers were impressed. I soon had a handful of job offers to choose from.
Of course, showcasing your sales skills with a fake cold call won't help you get anything other than a sales job, but that's not the point. The point is that you can be creative no matter what type of job you are looking for. Just find a way to showcase your skills without actually doing what everybody else does when looking for a job (sending dozens of resumes while hoping for a call back). It works!
Job Search Tips - Good Goals to Set For Yourself
Due to today's economy, it can be hard to find a job. The good news is that it isn't going to impossible for you to do, but it might be harder than say a few years back. So what can help you get a job? Of course having the skills and a good resume is key, but so is goal setting. As just stated, it might be harder to find a job in today's economy and a challenge is the perfect place for goals. These goals can help to provide motivation and more!
So when it comes to finding a job, what are some ideal goals to set for yourself?
Find Jobs You Are Qualified For - It is okay to apply for a few of your dream jobs or jobs that you like just because of the pay. On that same note, you want to focus on jobs that you are qualified for. This economy and the bad job market isn't the best time to be taking a chance. Because of that economy, fewer companies are hiring and when they do hire they want to ensure they are getting a qualified candidate; make sure you are that qualified candidate.
Improve Your Resume - In all honesty, your resume might be perfect (literally); however, it will not hurt to give it a second look. Print a copy and read it out loud. Do you notice any mistakes or any instances where a line doesn't make sense? If so, it is time to make changes now. Also, consider tailoring your resume to the position in which you are applying for. Remember, you want to show that you are the perfect candidate. Alter your objective to fit the job, bring extra attention to skills and training that are transferable, and so forth.
A Mock Interview Before Each Real Interview - Job interviews can be pretty nerve-racking especially if you haven't had an interview in a few years. However, don't be surprised to get some nervous butterflies floating around in your stomach even if you had a job interview two days ago! To help ease the stress and to ensure you are well-prepared, do a mock interview. You can always do this alone in your room with you and a mirror, but see if you can do a mock interview with any friends or family members (especially those who would be willing to provide unbiased feedback).
Search at Least Twice a Day - Since there are more Americans looking for a job than there are actual positions, lots of applications and resumes are sent out. Sometimes, a hiring manager can have enough applicants to hire for the position in less than 48 hours! Since there are no guarantees when resumes will stop being reviewed, you need to act fast. This means set a good goal on search, like search the career sites at least twice a day.
Send Out X Number of Resumes a Week - This is one of those goals that is good to have, but okay if you don't meet. As mentioned above, you want to focus most of your attention on jobs that you are qualified for. So lets say that you have the goal of sending out 15 resumes in one week. The week is coming to an end and you have only sent out 10 resumes, does this mean you need to apply to five jobs you aren't qualified for just to meet your goal? No.
Be Employed by XXXX Date - It is always good to have a job date in mind. With that said, this is not a goal that you can accomplish all by yourself. You can improve your chances of getting hired by searching often, applying for jobs you are qualified for, having a good resume, and having a great job interview. Even still though, you might walk away empty handed. Although there are no guarantees, create the goal of having a job in X number of weeks or months. If you meet your goal, good. If you don't meet your goal, you know you need to put forth more effort.

Presenting Yourself Professionally Throughout The Job Search
Remember, the seemingly small things do count when it comes to your professional image. For example:
o Ensure your email address is professional. "4kidsthenuthouse@hotmail.com" does not conjure up a professional image in the eyes of HR and hiring managers!
o Keep an email box just for your job search and check it regularly (twice a day at a minimum).
o When designing an email address use your first initial then last name. Or, if this is taken, try first initial.last name. Simple addresses reduce the likelihood of typos.
o Make sure your voice mail greetings at home and on your mobile phones are professional. "This is Jane and I can't find the phone just now. It must be in the back seat because I threw it at my screaming kids," will not do!
o Conduct an online "vanity search" by "Googling" your name. Is there anything you're going to have to explain in an interview? Also check LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, Classmates, etc. and ensure your online "presence" is clean and professional.
o Have an "elevator speech" prepared. When you meet networking contacts be prepared to talk about what you're interested in, why you're a good fit and how you'll add value to the company.
o Dress up one notch so that you're professional and polished. Candidates who have been cleaning the house, driving carpools, and making lunches and dinners for years need to throw out their sweats and t-shirts and update their hair and wardrobe to reflect a new professional image!
o Name Drop. Even though your mother told you not to do it, do it anyway! If someone referred you, you should use his or her name. It's okay. HR representatives and hiring managers scan hundreds of resumes and interview many candidates. They will likely give you more consideration if they know someone from within the company put your name forward. (Plus, sometimes those people get cash rewards if their candidate gets hired!)
o Smile during your interview! It's a conversation not an interrogation. Ask questions and talk with your interviewers. Nervousness makes you more tense, but enthusiasm is contagious!
The bottom line: Your physical and cyber images are extremely important! They are a reflection of you! They either say "professional", or they don't. Invest a little time and thought in your appearance and you'll feel great!
