The 4 Secret Skills To Career Advancement - And Finding Your Dream Job!

I remember it well, my first job. In the early days, I would walk in all fired up to get to work. I had a great attitude and was excited about work. Then it happened. I got stuck in a rut. I no longer had that desire and fire like in the beginning. I did not feel like I was moving forward and no longer felt like I was part of the team.

It was at this point I realized I had a problem. I was not going to be able to move forward in my job or my career unless I learned some new skills. Fortunately, just in time, a wise man grabbed me and taught me the 4 Secret Skills to career advancement and not losing my job.

I realized as I used these 4 Secrets that not only did I advance in my career, but also I was taken to my dreams. Without further ado, here are the 4 Secrets, so you too can succeed in your career as well!

1. Proper Attitude

A proper attitude is one of the most important possessions in your life. I cannot stress enough that a proper attitude is the # 1 secret. You must approach life with the "can do" attitude. You have to believe in yourself and you have to believe in being positive. This alone will separate you from the herd.

If you are one of those people who is preoccupied about who Brad Pitt is dating, or worried about someone else in another department, then you do not have the proper attitude. If you begin a task with a negative attitude, or by thinking you will not succeed, then you do not have the proper attitude. If you do your work half-heartedly, then you do not have the proper attitude.

What is the proper attitude? The proper attitude is one of focusing on the job at hand, giving it your fullest attention, believing in yourself, and doing your best. The positive attitude also includes honesty. It is honesty with yourself, your employer, your family, friends, or significant other.

That's all there is to it! At work you need to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, whether working alone or as part of a group. If you work hard, and give your best with a positive attitude, you will have just become the dream employee!

How do you get this attitude? That leads to secret number #2.

2. Personal Development

You must be doing personal development. This is a key to your moving forward. One of the first questions I would ask a prospective employee was: What books are you reading? That alone would give an indication of what the person thought was important.

I ask you now. What books are you reading? What Web sites do you visit? What seminars or workshops are you attending? Are you taking any continuing education? What is your personal plan for personal development, for personal improvement?

To maintain a proper attitude in today's world, we need to keep putting good stuff in our minds. Remember the old computer saying? "Garbage in, garbage out." It is the same for our intellect and soul. You need to get some positive material to help you get through the negative times and negativity.

To really apply this secret, get yourself 30 minutes of personal development every day.

I will suggest one tool that is free. Every morning, http://www.morningcoach.com gives 15 minutes of free coaching. It is a great way to start your daily personal development.

3 Listening Skills

Knowing how to listen is a critical secret. You need to learn how to truly listen, not just "hear" what others are saying. Nothing will make you move up faster than taking a legitimate interest in what your employer and fellow employees have to say.

Listening is learning to quiet what you want to say and absorbing what the other person wants you to hear. How do you listen well? You prepare to listen by stopping what you are doing and focusing on the other person. You then listen to their words, feelings, and needs as they talk to you. You can repeat a condensed version back to them to ensure you understood, allowing them time for clarification, before you say what you want to say.

In conversation, many of us say something, and then do not listen to the other person's reply because we are preparing what we want to say next. I know, not you! Well, stop talking and start listening!

Like that wise man told me, "You have two ears and one mouth for a reason."

4. Organization Skills

The 4th, and final secret is to get organized! There are six basic things that you need to organize:

1. Your contacts. Make sure you have a place to store all the valuable information about your contacts. This includes fellow employees, employers, friends, etc.

2. Your tools. We lose so much time looking for things such as paper clips, scissors, and CDs. Manage your workspace to minimize searching for necessary tools.

3. Your time. Use a planner to manage your personal projects and goals. Use the Plan, Do, Check, Act format.

4. Your daily action plan. Create a daily action plan, or use a daily to-do list or a checklist, to remember everything you need to accomplish each day.

5. Your calendar. Use a calendar to stay on top of appointments and future projects.

6. Your work journal. Keep a work journal, where you can store your thoughts and be creative with ideas. It is also great to take notes in at meetings.

The most important way to stay organized is finding the tools you are going to use and sticking with them. Do not change just because a new toy came out. Get good at your system. It does not have to be fancy - it just needs to work!

If you take these 4 Secrets and apply them you will be ahead of 95% of the workforce today. You will become invaluable to you employer and you will advance faster than you could ever imagine.

Is it easy? No way! I never said it was going to be. But you can do it! The key is the constant development every day and doing so with the proper attitude. You can make a difference in your own life and it can start today.

Get organized, get positive, hone your listening skills, and work on you. That is the real secret to moving up in your career!

Go do it!

Supercharge Your Job Search - Use Jack Bauer-Like Tactics to Find Your Ideal Position

If you have ever seen 24 on Fox, then you know who Jack Bauer is and what he is all about. If you have not seen this counterterrorist agent "on steroids" in action, just know that he is willing to do anything to get the bad guys. Whether you like Jack or not, or don't even know him, you may be asking, "What in the world does this have to do with my job search?" Well, read on and I will explain.

There are several basic principles involved in how the character of Jack Bauer operates during any investigation. Employing these principles, in a somewhat less extreme format, in your job search can lead to astounding results.

Gather Intelligence

The first step in the process, and the one that many skip entirely, is to conduct some research on the market you are interested in. This includes learning about the players involved, their financial status, the geographies they serve, and other information that will help you identify the organizations you can target during your search.

Furthermore, try to find the names of people within those organizations that may be a decision maker or influencer to the hiring process. You can also try to obtain the names and contact information for others within the organization that may be able to refer or introduce you to the hiring manager.

Leverage Your Resources

Like Jack Bauer, you want to use all the resources at your disposal to help you with your search. He doesn't save the world all by himself. He gets help from lots of people along the way. Some of these folks are those you would expect him to get help from, such as other personnel from other government agencies, while others are very unlikely sources of assistance. Consider all of your resources, and don't discount people from your arsenal just because they don't fit the typical mold of those you would expect help from.

Go On the Offensive

An all-out attack of these organizations is called for. Send them your resume by mail, post it to their website, email it to any contacts there, find recruiters that have relationships with them, and try cold calling the hiring manager directly to get an opportunity to explain what you have to offer them. Too many candidates are way too passive in this area of the search. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and go outside your comfort level. This is your career we are talking about here. Can you really be satisfied with anything but the best?

Think of it as a life-and-death situation like Jack Bauer does. You must be willing to do whatever it takes to be successful in your search. The results will be most rewarding.

So who am I anyway? Why do I think my advice is so valuable?

Job Search Tips: Ways to Avoid Wasted Time

If you are in need of a job, you might not consider job searching a waste of time. It is vital that you start obtaining a steady paycheck; therefore, any work and effort put into a job search is time well-spent. With that said, thousands of job seekers make simple, but time consuming mistakes. Yes, each simple mistake or oversight might only lead to a minute or two of wasted time, but that time can easily add up.

To ensure your job search goes off without a hitch and to ensure you don't waste a moment of time, here are some helpful tips:

Job Search Tip: Search Multiple Career Sites at Once

It is recommended that you search as many career sites as possible. This is due to the fact that not all companies use Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com. By only searching one job website, you limit yourself.

On that same note, you waste time if you are searching multiple job search sites separately. There are a number of computer applications, as well as smart phone apps, that enable you to search all the best career sites at once; with one search. It can take hours to search site #1, then search site #2, then site #3, and so forth.

Job Search Tip: Write Down all Jobs You Apply For and When

You might be surprised how many job seekers apply for the same job two or three times. Most of these duplicate applications or resumes are by mistake. Either way, they waste time. It is also important to note that hiring managers dislike duplicate resumes and job applications as well; it does not create a good impression.

By writing down all the jobs you applied for, you are aware. Keep in mind the date. If a company post a job for an office manager on Monday, but a new listing appears on Friday (same exact listing), they may be doing this to bump the job listing so it appears higher in the search results. If it is still the same position, don't apply again.

However, lets say your notes say you applied for that office manager job two months ago and the listing is reappearing. Apply again. Likely, the company hired an office manager and their new-hire didn't pan out.

Job Search Tip: Keep Your Resume Easily Accessible

If you are in the mist of a job search, your resume should always be within reach of your fingertips. When applying for jobs online, easily access your resume from your computer. Store it in your "My Documents" with a good name "Adnan Resume." You don't need to waste five minutes or more searching your computer for your resume because you know it is saved...somewhere.

The same holds true for printed resumes. Job seekers should always be prepared to apply for jobs. Maybe you are at the dentist and see a "now hiring secretary" sign. If you have a printed copy of your resume in your car, you can apply. There is no need to waste time and money to return home, print your resume, and return back to the office to apply.

As mentioned above, these are simple steps that can save you time. Remember, even saving 5 minutes of time in your job search is worthwhile because those 5 minutes can easily add up to hours over the course of a month.

Nursing Can Be A Rewarding Career

A career in nursing can be rewarding and exciting. Many people think that a nursing degree is not as respected as a medical school degree. It is important to realize that nurses are needed in growing numbers throughout the US. Nurses take care of patients and do a fairly large amount of the physical work involved. Nurses give shots, administer medication, and monitor and change IVs.

Nurses are educated in nursing school prior to getting a job. The early years of nursing school focus on beginner subjects such as how to wash hands properly and how to give a shop. As nurses progress through their education, they are placed into clinical settings to obtain real hands on experience. Once school is finished, nurses apply for jobs in their desired area. Because nurses are around a lot of medications, a drug test is usually required prior to acceptance of a job. Nurses can specialize in areas such as renal therapy, emergency room nursing, or surgical nursing. The specialties available are endless.

There are a lot of options available in the nursing field. Hospitals provide thousands of jobs to nurses. There is also the option of a doctor's office or nursing home. Nurses are needed for private home care. Nurses are also on staff at schools. The benefit of getting a nursing job at a school is three months off during the summer months.

There are many great things about the nursing field. Nurses are not stuck behind a desk for 8 hours a day staring at a computer. Nurses get to interact with many different people on a daily basis. Some nursing jobs involve working longer shift for three days a week and having a long weekend in between. The pay is not bad for a nurse and many places are always hiring new nurses. Most nurses wear scrubs to work which can be very comfortable and stylish.

There are also a few downsides to a career in nursing. Nurses are always around sick people, therefore they have a greater risk of becoming sick themselves. Sick people also tend to be cranky and nurses have to deal with angry patients with a smile. Some doctors may treat nurses with little respect. Nursing is considered by some people to be a woman's field. People may treat male nurses differently. Nurses have to deal with the reality that some of their patients will die no matter how much they nurture them. Nurses also may get attached to a patient in a hospital setting, only to never see them again after they are released. Nurses have to clean up after patients who have diarrhea or urinary accidents. They have to change bloody bandages. Some of the things they see are graphic and upsetting. Nursing is not for the weak at heart.

A career in nursing is rewarding, but it is not without its challenges. A nurse may not find her niche right away. With a little experience and experimentation, a nurse can find the most suitable job placement available to her.

Finance Job Interview Tips - Financial Careers Advice

The best bit of advice you can offer anyone going for a finance job interview is to be prepared. The time you put into preparation will have a direct relationship with how well you perform in the interview and how likely you are to get the job.

Firstly, find out as much about the company as you can in advance. The more you know about the potential employer the better. You can never know too much and it will help in two ways. You will show you are an observant individual with an outwardly looking understanding of the industry and the knowledge you have learnt will show you know what you are talking about. Secondly it will also show that you have researched the company. This time commitment of the research also shows how keen you are on the position. Any recruiter is always going to appreciate pro-active candidates who show that they are keen to get the job.

Think in advance what questions they are likely to ask. Many financial job interviews follow a similar pattern, so think ahead about what they might ask. Draw up a mind map using both you CV and the job advertisement to decide topics. You won't need scripted answers but the more time you have to think about answers the more likely you answer is to be what they are looking for. A few bullet points will give you a head start over the other less well prepared candidates.

Visualise your success. You can never underestimate the power of positive thinking. The worst that can come out of a financial job interview is you don't get the job. You didn't have a job when you entered the room so it shouldn't be the end of the world if you leave the room without it. Understanding this and assuming you will do well can work wonders.

It is impossible to avoid tough questions; though as many financial job interviews are similar there are plenty of things you can bear in mind to avoid any unnecessary heart ache. It's usually safe to assume the interviewers might adopt a "good cop/bad cop" dynamic even if it isn't deliberate. By expecting this you can learn to respond to questions in they way the interviewer will expect and show how capable you are of dealing with difficult people.

If you aren't sure how to answer a tough question, ask a follow up question. It will show a keen-ness to answer the question but buy you a little more thinking time. If you still don't know the answers they want to hear don't be afraid to admit it. It can look much worse if you answer incorrectly than admitting you don't know.

If you are facing a tough round of questioning in your job interview it's easy to ramble and forget to actually answer the question. So be careful not to lose your thread. If they notice you aren't actually answering their questions they will think you are at best evasive and at worse out of your depth.

There is plenty to be gained from asking good questions in job interviews, it will show you are interested in the role and show you are curious to learn more. One good question to ask is about what they think the best and worse aspects to the job role. Asking questions like this enable you to gain a better understanding of the role.

Another good and unusual question to ask is about the company's work culture. It shows you have an understanding of the work environment you feel most comfortable in. Similarly it shows a desire to understand more about the company beyond the jobs description.
